A Report on D-Hall Assignments

I do not say a word,
taste iron in the top of their mouths,
as I reach for the drawer—
where detention slips are stored.

I place the slip
on the podium before us,
and scan the crowd
heads all bowed
before this certain sacrament.

John Pierce is a teacher from Central Texas, who writes when he should be grading papers. Some of his recent work has appeared in Workers Write, Time of Singing, and Right Hand Pointing.
